Referee's report by Arthur Schuster, on a paper 'Wave-length determinations & general results obtained from a detailed examination of spectra photographed at the solar eclipse of Jan. 22 1898' by John Evershed

Reference number: RR/15/46

Date: January 1901

Description

Sectional committee: Physics and chemistry

Recommended for publication, in full. A method of identifying the appearances shown in the photographs should be introduced as no one but an expert could currently know what Evershed is referring to in the text. Has had great trouble understanding Evershed and is not sure that he has interpreted him correctly in several cases, for instance in the green corona line in the photographs. As the paper currently stands the illustrations have very little value. Suggests how the illustrations might be improved for clarification; a wavelength scale and annotations to indicate the substances involved. Asks queries or comments upon particular sections of the paper with reference to the relevant page of Evershed's original manuscript.
