Referee's report by Francis Henry Neville, on a paper 'Chemical dynamics and statics in light' by Meyer Wilderman
Reference number: RR/15/400
Date: February 1902
Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, on the grounds that it is a definite addition to knowledge, but the grammar and style of the paper are very unsatisfactory and must be revised before publication. Pages 31-41 describing the acetylene generator are certainly not at all appropriate matter for Transactions and might be replaced by a brief statement that by improving the valves of this generator a constant pressure of gas was obtained. The engravings of the generator should also be omitted. Did not find the six photographs of any assistance in reading the paper and thinks they could be omitted without loss. The author has omitted to state the scale of relation between the curves and tables. The curves should have on the same, or on the opposite page, an explanation stating what is plotted and the scale. The diagrams at page 25, 48, table one, and the curves should all be reproduced. The author has taken great pains to prepare pure gases but has allowed his chlorine to be in contact at one point with india rubber. On the whole the author has succeeded in a difficult experiment. The part of the paper which deals with his 'periods of induction & deduction', pages 76 et cetera, is to Neville the least satisfactory, and Neville briefly mentions other qualitative studies on the action of light on the system by Von Recklinghausen and Bevan.
