Referee's report by George Howard Darwin, on a paper 'Celestial mechanics. Influence of definite meteoric showers' by C S Stromeyer
Reference number: RR/15/390
Date: 20 December 1902
Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in its present form. The author's mathematics is clumsy and he clearly has no knowledge of celestial mechanics. Describes some grammatical errors, which in themselves would not lead him to condemn the paper but it is 'so extraordinarily ill written and arranged' that it is hardly possible to form an opinion of its value. He does not have the patience to unravel it. The subject of meteoric bombardment is well worthy of study but the limitations of generality adopted by the author are so great as to deprive his results of great interest. Considers the whole as notes for a paper, rather than as a paper in itself, thus the methods are explained in an obscure appendix. Regarding the mention of hiss own work, he never pretended to show that meteorites could by their collisions form a perfect gas, whatever that may be, but only that collisions might bring about conditions in some respect analogous to those existing in a gas. Does not understand why a perfect gas should not form condensations, nor the nature of the objections to the conditions of adiabatic equilibrium.
