Memoranda from Robert William Frederick Harrison, and reply from William Dobinson Halliburton and Francis Gotch, on a paper 'The decline of the injury current in mammalian nerve, and its modification by changes of temperature' by Sowton and John Smyth Macdonald
Reference number: RR/15/388
Date: 19 December 1902
Description
Sectional committee: not stated
Harrison thinks the length of the above mentioned paper greatly exceeds the length of a short paper for the Proceedings. Asks if Gotch thinks the attention of the author's should be drawn to this or whether the paper had better wait for a meeting of the Physiology Committee. Halliburton replies [undated] that the paper should be sent to him, he will then be able to judge better.
Halliburton replies on 20 December that the paper does not appear capable of being shortened. Sherrington and the authors should be communicated with and told that the paper will be considered to have been submitted for Philosophical Transactions. If they agree, a short abstract will be required. Halliburton suggests Dr Waller and Professor Gotch as referees. Another note from Harrison [undated] states that having been consulted, Sherrington expressed decided preference for [publication in] the Proceedings.
A final note is provided by Professor Gotch, dated 15th January 1903. The paper would actually take up at most eight pages of the Proceedings but there are in manuscript 25 pages of tables. Gotch does not think these need to be reproduced and explains why he does not think they actually strengthen the author's argument. Suggests the tables be omitted and the paper published in the Proceedings. Does not consider it necessary to publish all the illustrations, and suggests the author selects four or five. Does not consider the paper as it stands, suitable for publication in the Philosophical Transactions.
