Description

Sectional Committee: Zoology

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full. No modification appears necessary. All the illustrations are necessary but they should be reduced. It is a piece of thoroughly good work which it would be useful have for reference in English. He would like to submit the following for the Committee; the greater portion of the work has already been done by Pelseneer, whose classification the author for the greater part refutes. Pelseneer's classification was based on more than the structure of the gills. The present memoir contains descriptions of genera and species which Pelseneer had not seen, but at the same time it must be admitted that if the aim of the investigation has been to test the utility of gill structure as a basis for classification, the result is nil. The most important outcome of the paper is the discovery that extreme structural modification may be repeated in remotley related forms, in such a manner as to show that, as chief criteria for affinity, the gills are not useful.
