Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions.The descriptions given in sections two, three and four might be condensed considerably, in view of the accompanying illustrations. The argument seems somewhat confused in section eight and is diffusely expressed, but the main facts seem new and suggestive. Section nine should be much reduced. The author's reason for not giving a more complete bibliography appears quite insufficient. Conclusion two in section ten does not appear to have been reached by Pouchet. The illustrations the most valuable part in the morphological portion of the paper, and would advise retaining these whilst reducing the text. Despite very obvious defects of a literary kind, and of some weakness in its argument, the paper appears to contribute a considerable number of new facts, and also some new views, to a most interesting and important subject.
