Letter from George James Burch, on a paper 'Electro-molecular wave' by Jagadis Chunder Bose to Joseph Larmor

Reference number: RR/15/304

Date: April 1902

Description

Sectional Committee: not stated.

He was interested to see the paper. One form of the author's new apparatus meets the objection that he raised before, but does not settle the point raised, namely whether this is not simply a case of deformation of a polarized surface. He has spoken with the author on several occasions on the subject and went to the author hoping to see his experiments, but he happened to be away. Suggested before Christmas that he should see if the phenomena persisted when the electrolyte was a salt of the metal experimented on, but the author does not seem to have taken the hint. He is worried that the author will guess whose opinion has been given on his paper and thinks he would have preferred a different referee. He wonders if the Committee might obtain a second opinion.

He has not performed the suggested experiment as he would prefer that the author did it and thus complete an investigation over which he has spent a great deal of time and labour. It would be 'very unwise' to publish without performing the experiment as it would occur instantly to the first chemist who read the paper.
