In reply to the Assistant Secretary's letter of today's date respecting the author's specimens, he can only say that his examination of the actual specimens serves entirely to confirm the report he has already made on the paper. He has failed to find any good evidence in the specimens in favour of Bastian's views on heterogenesis. No reliance whatever can be placed on results from which extremely obvious sources of error have not been satisfactorily eliminated.
