Referee's report by Shelford Bidwell, on a paper 'On the effects of magnetism' by Guy Barlow
Reference number: RR/15/298
Date: March 1902
Description
Sectional Committee: not stated
The paper is much longer than is justified by the subject matter and most of the figures are unnecessary. The historical introduction might be omitted with advantage. Though the bibliography is incomplete some of the papers referred to have no bearing on the current paper. There is nothing qualitatively new in the longitudinal effects for moderate fields. Curves for nickel and iron similar in general character to those shown in figures one to three were published by Tomlinson, Philosophical Transactions, part one, 143-145. The author has carried his experiments further than his predecessors and a short record of the results would be of some value. The hysteresis effects have, to his knowledge, never been studied before. They are nearly the same for all three metals and it would be sufficient to give the curves for one of them.
The experiments on longitudinal effects in high fields are 'worthless' and do not justify any definite conclusions. The experiments on transverse effects appear both new and important and form by far the most valuable part of the work. Provides a short list of recommendations to be forwarded to the author. The paper would be considerably improved by condensation. The account of the experimental arrangements is unnecessarily diffuse and much of the comment on the results is superfluous.
