Description

Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The last paper of this kind was published in the Proceedings and the two papers should appear in the same journal. The results are new and mark a distinct step in the advancement of natural knowledge. No modifications are necessary or desirable. Though not absolutely necessary, all the figures would be useful and should be granted so far as their insertion is consistent with the character of the Proceedings. If space or economy is pressing figure three can serve instead of figures one, two and three. Figures four and five correspond to figures in the previous paper and should be given as analogous. The interference figures afford a pretty illustration of the universality[?] for different rates at different temperatures and if possible should be reproduced. The memoir is one of a series and gives the results of long and patient experiment and observation. The value of the work depends on the precision of the determination of small differences; a more than usually detailed statement is thus necessary so that the reader may know the degree of confidence to be placed in the numbers arrived at. The work will be very useful later for reference and the author should be encouraged, by publication, to continue it.
