Referee's report by Henry Alexander Miers, on a paper 'The intimate structure of crystals, Part V' by William Johnson Sollas
Reference number: RR/15/257
Date: 13 May 1901
Description
Sectional Committee: not stated.
The paper should be accepted and published but with considerable modification. Outlines what he thinks is the main result of the work. In place of the rough graphical solution on page eight a quadratic equation should be found giving the angle of rotation in terms of the diameter of the silver atoms and the length 'C C'. In Miers' opinion the attempt to connect the angle of gyrohedral rotation with the axial intercepts is of no value and this work might be omitted. The speculations concerning cuprite are 'very ingenious' and well worthy of publication, but he doubts if comparison with them, those relating to two other stated molecules deserve more than very brief mention. The figures as presently numbered do not agree with the references in the letter press. The structure assigned to Argentite and Cuprite is probably identical with that suggested for similar compounds by Barlow, and this should be mentioned.
