Referee's report by John Ambrose Fleming, on a paper 'The measurement of magnetic hysteresis' by George Frederick Charles Searle and T G Bedford
Reference number: RR/15/252
Date: May 1901
Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
In answer Fleming thinks that whilst the paper contains much useful information and painstaking work, it can hardly be said to be a very important contribution to the subject of magnetic hysteresis and if published in Philosophical Transactions, it ought to be compressed. The results hardly justify the papers publication in extenso together with the numerous diagrams. The authors ought to be asked to considerably abbreviate the paper. Some of the theory might be given less fully as the method is hardly likely to come into very general use. The latter part of the paper dealing with the results obtained is the most valuable part. The illustrations to be omitted will depend on the revision of the text.
The method is not likely to be employed commercially and the results obtained, though interesting, do not very much advance their knowledge of the causes of hysteretic loss or the way to diminish it.
