Referee's report by Herbert McLeod, on a paper 'A comparative study of the spectra, densities and melting points of some groups of elements and of the relation of properties to atomic mass' by Hugh Ramage
Reference number: RR/15/246
Date: December 1901

Description
Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Proceedings, rather than Philosophical Transactions. The abstract that has already been printed gives a fair idea of the paper but its value would be much increased by the publication of the diagrams. The references to the diagrams, even in the full paper, are insufficient, and diagrams one and two should be provided with a scale of wave-lengths in addition to that of oscillation frequencies, for many spectral lines mentioned in the paper are described by the wave-length only and it is not easy to identify them in the diagrams. The diagrams indicating the relations between the atomic masses and the densities and melting points of the elements are necessary for understanding the text of both the paper and the abstract and many of the relations which are shown are of interest. Diagrams three and four are not mentioned in in the abstract and would therefore be unnecessary, if it is decided to print only the later. The relations to which they refer seem to be of importance so a short description of them might be added to the abstract.
