Referee's report by John Newport Langley, on a paper 'The chemistry of nerve-degeneration' by Frederick Walker Mott and William Dobinson Halliburton
Reference number: RR/15/224
Date: April 1901
Description
Sectional Committee: Physiology
If the paper is regarded simply as a continuation of that which has already appeared in Philosophical Transactions, he thinks this also might appear there. If it is regarded as a separate communication, publication in Proceedings will prove more suitable. The paper should be published in full with the reservation that the part dealing with the histological appearances should be abbreviated. Figures one to 17 should be reproduced, with the blank spaces cut out and the height of the blood pressure, if necessary, inserted. Drawings A, B, and C, should be reproduced. The other figures should be omitted and do not appear to contain anything new.
The work seems to have been very carefully done and the results clearly stated but it does not contain any new idea. In the earlier work chlorine was found to be formed during the degeneration of the nervous tissue of the brain, and it is natural enough that it would also be formed during the degeneration of peripheral nerves.
