Referee's report by Charles Scott Sherrington, on a paper 'Observations on the visual purple of the retina' by F W Edridge Green
Reference number: RR/15/185
Date: 07 December 1901

Description
Sectional committee: [Physiology]
He returns the communication on which his opinion was desired [not attached] and also the expression of his opinion [page three]. Asks these to be forwarded to the appropriate place, noting that the statement of opinion is confidential.
Provides a manuscript report dated 6 December 1901. The direct observation that visual purple extends into the yellow spot would be a matter of scientific interest and merit publication in the Proceedings as this is in opposition to observations previously accepted and Sherrington thinks that more experiments should be made before affirming the statement before the Royal Society. The fact could be demonstrated by objective evidence before the Physiological Society and this would be a more appropriate place perhaps for publication, also as there is no provision for demonstrating evidence involving fresh vivisection at the Royal Society. The literary style of the paper is so bad as give an impression of 'great illiteracy' but to actually render the meaning of the text obscure. No reason is offered for the omission of all reference to closely cognate observations.
