Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions after re-editing and compression. The part detailing with the earlier work and preliminary observations might have been made a good deal shorter. The illustrations are very numerous and will be somewhat costly to reproduce. Thinks the high speed alternating machine is interesting in itself and the related diagrams should be included. As the results stated in tables VII, VII, IX and X are represented in curves, there might be some considerable abridgement of said tables. The paper contains much valuable matter and constitutes a distinct addition to natural knowledge on the subject. The paper is however somewhat diffuse and in many places the expression is 'very awkward'. The value of the paper really lies in the careful investigation of the behaviour of the arc under different conditions, and this will remain whether the author's conclusions are fully accepted or not. Discusses the difference in his conclusion with that of Ayrton's work, which is also mentioned in Duddell's paper.
