Referee's report by William Dobinson Halliburton, on a paper 'The fermentation of urea; a contribution to the study of the chemistry of the metabolism in bacteria' by Walter Ernest Adeney

Reference number: RR/15/142

Date: 20 June 1901

Description

Sectional committee: Physiology

Not recommended for publication. The paper is not of the 'complete and exhaustive nature' required for Philosophical Transactions. Comments on the absence of actual proof regarding the presence of organisms, with no microscopic examination recorded and no attempt to identify or separate the organisms. Includes further criticism of the 'haphazard' methods used. With regard to the methods and results of gas analysis, he prefers to trust the judgment of the other referee, Dr [John Scott] Haldane, due to his greater experience in that branch of science. Providing Haldane's opinion is favourable, he would recommend publication in the Proceedings due to the new fact about urea, which is that on putrefaction it undergoes another change in addition to the hydrolytic decomposition with ammonium carbonate. With regard to Adeney's conclusions, he recommends the omission of number one, and minor edits to conclusions two and seven.
