Referee's report by Mervyn Herbert Nevil Story-Maskelyne, on a paper 'A comparative crystallographical study of the double selenates of the series R2M(SeO4)2,6H20. Part 1- Salts in which M is zinc' by Alfred Edward Howard Tutton

Description
Sectional committee: Physics and chemistry
Not recommended for publication. Does not advise the reproduction of figures one and two as any crystollographer can project the crystals for himself without difficulty from the data given. Figure one illustrates an application to an instrument previously described by the author and he thinks the description enough without the figure. Figure three might perhaps be reproduced but needs a little more explanation, as it will not be complicated to reproduce it might be placed in the abstract with adequate explanation. If concisely re-written the paper might stand at half its current length and it might be suggested to the author that he undertakes this for the purpose of its being published in the Transactions, were the results arrived at of much novelty or importance. The Potassium salt discussed has previously been thoroughly investigated by Topsoe and Christiansen and this paper confirms their work. This paper is only as part of a series of similar studies and the determinations of the work of this paper have no special importance, though of course they are not without a certain value as additions to knowledge. Recommends tabulation of results and a reduced description of the method. Thinks the results observed can hardly be estimated as a distinct step in the advancement of scientific knowledge.
He had written the above opinion before opening the records of the opinions of the two other Fellows, so as not to bias his opinions. He concurs entirely with the opinion of Professor Armstrong and endorses his proposal that the author should be invited to expand his printed abstract for publication in the Proceedings by giving in concise tabulated form the actual measurements and determinations that are at once essential and new for the comparison the author is instituting between the salts he has examined.
