Referee's report by Charles Chree, on a paper 'Underground temperature at Oxford in the year 1899 as determined by five platinum resistance thermometers' by Arthur Alcock Rambaut
Reference number: RR/15/105
Date: 19 June 1900

Description
Sectional committee: Physics and chemistry
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, 'certainly not in full'. Of the four sheets of curves the two which treat of the mean monthly temperature gradients and the mean monthly temperature seem the most important. The paper does not seem of much novelty. The data available are limited and not treated in a novel way, nor do they strike him as comparable in extent with those available from a good many other stations, and the treatment seems much less suggestive than Professor Callendar's discussion of earth temperature results obtained with platinum thermometers in Canada. The paper is more suitable for the Philosophical Magazine or quarterly Journal of the Royal Meterologial Society where it might appear in full. Notes the curves are very nicely drawn but very large.
An auxiliary report considers the value of the paper under the headings: as a contribution to platinum thermometry; as a comparatively novel use of platinum thermometers; as a contribution to geophysics. Includes discussion of the Callendar-Griffith's resistance box, and Callender & McLeod's papers in the 'Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada Section III'. Discusses the reliability of thermometers and data recording lengths.
Also encloses notes on special points consisting of comments with reference to particular pages of the original manuscript paper.
[Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society, 1900].
