The paper contains material of sufficient interest and importance to be accepted, but not for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The figures are needed but he does not regard the colouring as essential. Provides a series of criticisms with reference to particular pages of the manuscript, including where statements are given without supporting evidence. Highlights the new points given in the paper but notes these are not new in principle, only as regards this kind of bacterium.
