Referee's report by Mervyn Herbert Nevil Story Maskelyne, on a paper 'An instrument for cutting, grinding, and polishing section-plates and prisms of mineral or other crystals accurately in the desired directions' by Alfred Edwin Howard Tutton
Reference number: RR/12/397
Date: 28 December 1894
Description
Not recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. Refers to the instrument makers Troughton & Simms. The purpose of the instrument is nearly identical to another published by the author in the Philosophical Transactions, which was designed to grind soft crystals. The new instrument also can cut any crystal. The methods for manipulating crystals in the instrument are nearly identical. The new instrument is an an advance on the previous one, but no new principles are presented. The abstract sufficiently covers the paper and should be published in the Proceedings. Considers the photograph to be too small to be of good illustrative purposes, suggests a larger scale drawing or photograph be provided.
