Description

Plate 17 containing several artworks and captions pasted onto one backing sheet. Contains two specimens from the jaw of a modern hyaena [hyena] from the 'Cape' [Cape of Good Hope] (figures 1-2); three views of fossilised hyena jaws (figures 3-5) found in Kirkdale Cave [North Yorkshire, England]. Below figure 5 is a pencil inscription reading 'Copy the enamel of the teeth from the pencil drawing B which is not to be engraved', in reference to a sixth drawing of hyena tooth enamel pasted into the bottom right corner. The work is inscribed with publication and plate details. Signed bottom left 'T. Webster del'. Royal Society stamp verso. The manuscript for this paper is wanting.

Published in Philosophical Transactions as part of paper titled 'Account of an assemblage of fossil teeth and bones of elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, bear, tiger, and hyæna, and sixteen other animals; discovered in a cave at Kirkdale, Yorkshire, in the year 1821: with a comparative view of five similar caverns in various parts of England, and others on the continent' by William Buckland.

Read to the Royal Society on 21 February 1822.
