The first of two volumes containing the manuscript versions of papers published by the Royal Society in volume 151 of Philosophical Transactions in 1861. This volume comprises papers XX-XXIX.

The volume also includes some original illustrations and figures in various media (drawings, watercolours) in support of the papers.

Missing from this volume is the manuscript for the following paper:
'On the great magnetic disturbance which extended from August 28 to September 7, 1859, as recorded by photography at the Kew Observatory' by Balfour Stewart.
