Manuscripts of papers published in Philosophical Transactions, 1836-1839

Description

Volume of the manuscript versions of papers published by the Royal Society in Philosophical Transactions volumes 126, 128, and 129 in 1836, 1838 and 1839.

The volume also includes some original illustrations and figures in various media (drawings, watercolours) in support of the papers.

A note in the front of the volume reads 'Phil. Trans. 1836 - 1838 - 1839. The others missing. Bound 1856'. Manuscripts present from vol 126 include the following:
'An account of the great earthquake experienced in Chile on the 20th of February, 1835; with a map' by Alexander Caldcleugh;
'Some account of the Volcanic eruption of Cosegüina in the Bay of Fonseca, commonly called the Bay of Conchagua, on the Western Coast of Central America' by Alexander Caldcleugh;
'Discussion of the magnetical observations made by Captain Back, R. N. during his late arctic expedition' by Samuel Hunter Christie;
'Note relative to the supposed origin of the deficient rays in the solar spectrum; being an account of an experiment made at Edinburgh during the annular eclipse of 15th May 1836' by James David Forbes; and
'On the brain of the negro [sic], compared with that of the European and the orang-outang' by Frederick Tiedemann.
