Description

Bonney writes: 'The number of specimens described in this concluding paper of the series is not great, although more mountains are represented than on any other occasion. Four out of the five mountains enumerated above are volcanic, and, as will be seen, their rocks all belong to the andesite group. Sara-urcu, however, consists wholly of metamorphic rocks, and thus lies outside the volcanic zone. I am again indebted to Mr. Whymper for the interesting general notes which are pre­faced to the lithological descriptions. Altar. "This mountain is probably the fifth in rank of the Ecuadorian Andes, and according to Messrs. Reiss and Stubel is 17,730 feet high. Owing to long continued bad weather I could neither ascend nor measure it. It is about 40 miles E. S. E. of Chimborazo, and lies S. of Cotopaxi, having nearly the same longitude.'
