Paper, 'On the effect of tension upon magnetic changes of length in wires of iron, nickel, and cobalt' by Shelford Bidwell

Reference number: PP/15/32

Date: 1890

Description

Bidwell writes: 'A former communication to the Royal Society ('Roy. Soc. Proc.,’ No. 243, 1886, p. 257) [see PP/8/17] contains an account of some experiments relating to the magnetic extensions and contractions of iron wires under tension. [...] The subject, however, seemed worthy of more complete investigation, and I have lately undertaken a series of experiments in which the changes of length undergone by a stretched iron wire were traced continuously as the magnetising force was gradually increased from a small value up to about 375 C.G.S. units. Similar experiments were also made with a nickel wire and with a thin strip of cobalt, the behaviour of these metals under tension never having been previously studied.'

Annotations in pencil and ink. Includes five pages of diagrams of experimental apparatus and results.

Subject: Physics / Magnetism / Metallurgy

Received 8 April 1890 / 17 April 1890. Read 24 April 1890.

A version of this paper was published in volume 47 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the effect of tension upon magnetic changes of length in wires of iron, nickel, and cobalt'.
