Index to early volumes of 'Philosophical Transactions'

Reference number: MS/624

Date: c.1770

Description

Large folio, unbound. Likely prepared by John Robertson FRS, appointed librarian (clerk, housekeeper and keeper of the Repository) in December 1767.
The index is organised thematically: 'Optics'; 'Astronomy'; 'Magnetism'; 'Pneumatics'; 'Physiology' 'Hydrology'; 'Painting, Sculpture &c'; 'Births and Burials'; etc.. within each theme, articles are listed and numbered in chronological order of publication with the title, author, then issue number and volume number. The themes are worded near identically to John Lowthorp's Abridgement of the Philosophical Transactions, but MS/624 lists all titles, with no selections, its organisation of the themes is different and it includes material published after Lowthorp's.
Entries seem to cover 1665 to the 1750s.

Smaller paper size is inserted in every opening of the large folio, at least two separate hands.
