Description

Record book of the papers received by the Royal Society for publication in the Philosophical Transactions or Proceedings of the Royal Society. The ledger was used to keep track of the circulation of manuscripts, record which papers were further submitted to the Committee of Papers and subsequently published.

For each manuscript is entered:
Number; title; author(s); communicator(s); date and by whom received; date read at a weekly meeting; date refereed; name of referee(s); decision 'how disposed of'; and additional remarks.


The volume covers manuscripts received between November 1853 and September 1885, which corresponds to printed volumes 144 to 176 of Philosophical Transactions and printed volumes 6 to 38 of Proceedings. There is a gap for the period 1857-1862.

This volume corresponds to the period when George Gabriel Stokes FRS served as editor for the journals.
