Additional papers read before, or collected by the Royal Society

Reference number: MS/366

Date: 1551-1714

A series of volumes containing manuscripts of papers read before the Society, and others not entered into the Classified Papers series. content is ancillary to the Classified Papers series [CLP, 1592 -1741] and overlapping in date. As with Classified papers the content covers the full breadth of the Society’s interests, ranging from politics (the constitutions of Carolina) to migration of birds. Notable papers include a treatise on an early seed drill to increase agricultural efficiency ‘The Sembrador’ by Lucatello, and ‘Problemata Physica’ by Thomas Hobbes.

The authors' names and short titles of papers are listed at the front of each volume.

Sometimes referred to as the "Extra" manuscripts sequence.

Custodial history

Domestic papers. It is not clear why these papers are separate from the CLP series, they are not arranged according to that series’ subject classification, chronologically or by author so may simply have been overlooked in the arrangement and binding of CLP in 1741. Those of particular significance were entered into the register books of the Society as was normal practice and they followed the usual pattern of being read and in some case subsequently published by the Society.
