Description
Nine volumes of scientific letters and papers from various authors containing accounts, observations and theories covering a wide variety of subjects and disciplines. Sent to the Royal Society for discussion and possible publishing. Some items feature original artwork, figures and tables. The coverage of the volumes that make up decade 1 is as follows:
Volume 1: item numbers 1-82, read 29 October 1741 - 1 April 1742
Volume 2: item numbers 83-137, read 8 April 1742 - 25 November 1742
Volume 3: item numbers 138-169, read 9 December 1742 - 28 April 1743 (note overlap in dates with subsequent volume)
Volumes 4 and 5 (bound together): item numbers 170-231, read 3 March 1742/43 - 24 November 1743
Volume 6: item numbers 232-279, read 8 December 1743 - 26 April 1744
Volume 7: item numbers 280-323, read 26 April 1744 - 22 November 1744
Volume 8: item numbers 324-375, read 6 December 1744 - 16 May 1745 (note overlap in dates with subsequent volume)
Volume 9: item numbers 376-430, read 28 March 1745 - 21 November 1745
Volume 10a: item numbers 431-480, read 5 December 1745 - 30 October 1746 (note gap in coverage, subsequent volume, in decade 2 ref.no. L&P/2 begins with papers read in December 1749)
The dates given correspond to the date that the papers were written/sent by the author. The read date in the description indicates when papers were read at a Royal Society meeting.
Each volume contains a typescript list of contents which provides: a document reference number, author, title, extent, date of reading to the Society and place of publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions' as far as could be determined for each item.
