Loose copies of letters from John Herschel to Mary Somerville (7 letters, including some copied from the "Personal recollections of Mary Somerville" Murray 1873); Augustus de Morgan (3 letters); [Francis?] Baily (1 letter); Michael Faraday (2 letters); Admiral [Robert] Fitzroy (2 letters); Davies Gilbert (1 letter); Frederick Howlett (1 letter); Alexander von Humboldt (1 letter); Robert Hunt (1 letter); William Stanley Jevons (1 letter); William Lassell (1); Humphrey Lloyd (2 letters); John William Lubbock (2 letters); Thomas Maclear (11 letters, some summaries); Edward Sabine (3 letters); Charles Piazzi Smyth (1 letter); William Henry Smyth (1 letter); William Whewell (1 letter).
Letters arranged in rough chronological order for those with possible year, then alphabetical for the undated ones.
The letters are preceded by a typed index pasted over the original wrapper, iindicating previous locations (Box n.2.) and previous shelfmark. Notes "Dates uncertain" in ink at the top of the index. At the back in pencil "These may be already available in original forms".
Letters copied by various copyists as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father.
