Loose copies of letters from John Herschel to James South (4 letter); Thomas Henderson (1 letter); John Fairbairn (1 letter); Hugh Percy (3rd Duke of Northumberland) (1 letter); James Clark Ross (1 letter); George Biddell Airy (2 letters); William Whewell (2 letters); Dominique Francois Jean Arago (1 letter); John Shepherd (1 letter); John Lubbock (1 letter); William Henry Smyth (2 letters); "H" MacLeod [could be Norman MacLeod] (1 letter); David Brewster (2 letters); "T." Cranch [could be Joseph Cranch] (1 letter); Henry Kater (3 letters); Mary Frances Kater, née Reeves (3 letters).
Letters arranged in rough chronological order for those with possible year, then alphabetical for the undated ones.

The letters are preceded by a typed index indicating previous locations (Box n.2.) and previous shelfmark. Notes "Dates uncertain" in ink at the top of the index.
Letters copied by various copyists as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father.
