Reference number: HS/23/298

Date: 17 March 1866

Description

Copy of letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Will subscribe to Herbert Spencer's work as requested [see Herbert Spencer's 1860-3-5], but dissents 'from very large portions' of Herbert Spencer's views. Especially objects to Herbert Spencer's adoption of the 'Shibboleth of the Hegel & Schelling School of German Philosophy—the Absolute."' [This letter misdated; correct date: 1860-3-17.]"
