Copy of draft letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Fulfills request for advice on the operation of the Cape Observatory. Urges, among other points, that Thomas Maclear be given a second assistant and an improved telescope and that the observatory be assigned to undertake tidal, meteorological, and magnetic observations.
