Letter, from John Augustus Lloyd to [Sir William Nicolay, Governor of Mauritius, dated at Mauritius

Reference number: HS/11/299

Date: October 1837

Description

Autograph letter signed by sender. In response to a letter from the Colonial Office praising his work but considering that the expense for the Mauritius observatory should be incurred by the mother land, Lloyd lists the advantages for Mauritius to have its own observatory, including the necessity for ships to keep chronometers to time. Summary of the dispute over the costs of the observatory and sending list of costs that Lloyd incurred in the building and furnishing of the observatory. Argues that the colonial government should pay as most benefitting from the observatory and that a small tax on ships coming to Mauritius or using the observatory to synchronise their chronometers could be levied.
This table was likely sent in enclosure to HS/11/298, Herschel also sent it to Thomas Maclear, who thanked him for it in HS/12/195.
