Paper, 'Observations concerning the subterraneous trees in Dagenham, and other marshes bordering the river of Thames in the County of Essex' by W [William] Derham
Reference number: CLP/9i/65
Date: 1710
Description
Derham describes a large number of alder and oak trees unearthed during a flood when the river breached the Thames Wall. The trees were of varying sizes, were not living, and had become very dry.
Subject: Botany
Published in Philosophical Transactions as 'Observations concerning the subterraneous trees in Dagenham, and other marshes bordering upon the river of Thames, in the county of Essex'.
Later manuscript annotation indicates that this paper was read to the Royal Society on 8 May 1712, but this is clearly erroneous as it was published in 1710.
