List, 'For the better making a history of the weather, I conceive it requisite to observe ...' by Robert Hooke

Reference number: CLP/20/2

Date: 07 October 1663

Description

Hooke then lists the things that should be observed to make a history [record] of the weather:
1. The strength of the winds
2. The degrees of heat and cold in the air, observed by a thermometer
3. The degrees of dryness and moisture in the air, observed by a hygroscope
4. The pressure in the air, observed by an instrument containing quicksilver
5. The consitution and face of the sky
6. What effects the weather produces on the body of men (colds, fevers, etc)
7. What thunder and lightning may happen, and its effect on the natural world
8. Anything extraordinary on the tides
Thinks that these should be diligently observed and recorded by someone near. Suggests a scheme for recording a month's weather so that it can be viewed by eye on a page.

Includes a practice table filled in for three days under these headings. Also includes a drawing of an instrument desgined to show wind direction [CLP/20/2/2]
