This paper was originally enclosed with a letter from Alexander Cuming to James Jurin dated 11 November 1727 at Edinburgh; no longer present with manuscript. The paper contains a demonstration of Sir Isaac Newton's rule of algebra for finding the number of impossible roots in an equation with an improvement upon it.
