Description

Hauksbee describes some experiments carried out at Gresham College on 31 October 1705, 'showing that it requires not soe thin a medium as is made by the weight of mercury in the Torricellian experiment to produce the mercurial phosphore', referring to Evangelista Torricelli's 1643 experiment to prove that the source of vacuum comes from atmospheric pressure.
