Reference number: CLP/14i/39
Date: 1694
Description
De Vaux describes the case of a woman with a swollen abdomen and relates a medicine prescribed to her by Dr Baitz, found amongst the papers of Theodore de Mayerne, quoting Raitz's Latin prescription. The medicine was ineffective, and the woman approaching Mayerne some time later, in pain as she had been persuaded to swallow stones as a cure. Mayerne and de Vaux gave her oil to help move the stones along, and planned to surgically remove the stones. The woman did not want to have the operation, and so took a 'water' from a woman who claimed it would cure her. The water ultimately did cure the woman's swelling.
