Description

Excerpts of two letters that provide details about the soil in Yorkshire. Lister's observations include the need to put clay in sandy soil and the fact that planting 'white briony' can make good grass or corn. Lister lists some further plants that could be used to improve agriculture.

Published in Philosophical Transactions as 'Part of two letters wrote some time sine to Oxford, by Dr. Martin Lister, Fell. of Coll of Phys. & R. S. concerning several plants may be usefully cultivated for producing Grass or Hay'.

Read to the Royal Society on 4 February 1696.
