The paper is divided into the following sections: a general introduction; 'Application of the analogy of septate anthers to the case of synangia of Pteridophyta'; 'Ophioglossaceae'; 'Ophioglossum'; 'Development of sporangia from the sporangiogenic band'; 'General morphology of the spike in the genus Ophioglossum'; 'Helminthostachys zeylanica (Hook)'; 'Abnormalities of Helminthostachys'; 'Botrychium'; 'Botrychium daucifolium (Wall)'; 'Abnormalities'; 'Attempt to trace sequences in the Ophioglossaceae'; 'Theory of the fertile spike of the Ophioglossaceae'; 'Discussion in evidence of septation'; and 'Do prototypes of the Ophioglossaceae exist among living plants?'.

Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Includes a note from the Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society stating that the paper 'was passed by the Committee of Papers for the Transactions'.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 59 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Studies in the morphology of spore-producing members. Part. II. Ophioglossaceæ'.
