Description

Tutton presents an updated version of an instruments which was described by him in volume 185 of Philosophical Transactions ('An instrument for grinding section-plates and prisms of crystals of artificial preparations accurately in the desired directions'). This new instrument has been devised and constructed upon similar principles, but with the necessary modifications and additions to enable equally accurately orientated plates or prisms to be prepared from the relatively harder crystals of natural minerals.

Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Includes one photograph of Tutton's instrument.

Subject: Scientific apparatus and instruments / Engineering / Crystallography

Received 28 November 1894. Read 14 February 1895. Communicated by J W [John Wesley] Judd.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 57 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'An instrument for cutting, grinding, and polishing section-plates and prisms of mineral or other crystals accurately in the desired directions'.
