The principal object of this paper is to obtain a theoretical explanation of the instability of viscous liquids, which has been experimentally studied by Professor Osborne Reynolds.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 52 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Stability and instability of viscous liquids'.
