Hunter writes: 'A special interest attaches to the rôle of oxygen in the life-history of bacteria. Very wide differences exist, however, between different groups in respect of its importance.' He presents experimental results and observations.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 49 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'The influence of oxygen on the formation of ptomaines'.
