Unpublished paper, 'Protoplasmic movements and their relation to oxygen pressure' by James Clark
Reference number: AP/66/1
Date: 1889
Description
Clark presents the results of a series of experiments made to ascertain the minimum pressure of oxygen necessary to restore the streaming, amoeboid and ciliary movements of protoplasm after they have come to rest in the absence of that gas. The object experimented upon was in each case placed in a hanging drop of water and exposed to an indifferent gas such as hydrogen or nitrogen, or else put into connection with the exhausted receiver of an air pump.
Includes one diagram of Clark's experimental setup.
Subject: Chemistry / Microbiology
Received 19 June 1889. Read 20 June 1889. Communicated by S H [Sidney Howard] Vines.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 46 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Protoplasmic movements and their relation to oxygen pressure'.
