Description

Stoney writes on the dependence of the atomicity and other properties of some of the chemical elements upon the order in which their atomic weights succeed one another. He suggests that it must be possible to identify a mathematical relation between a series of numbers and the successive atomic weights of the elements. The paper is divided into five sections: 'Introductory', 'The results attained', 'Discussion of neighbouring curves', 'On a disposition of the curve which is convenient for laboratory use' and 'Observations'.

Annotations in ink throughout. Includes four page of tables and diagrams.

Subject: Mathematics / Chemistry

Received 16 April 1888. Read 19 April 1888.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 44 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the logarithmic law of atomic weights'.
