Larmor writes: 'This paper relates to the general theory of partial differential coefficients, and their relations to total differentials, and to the inverse procedure for the solution of partial differential equations, and of equations of total differentials.'

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 43 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the direct application of first principles in the theory of partial differential equations'.
