Unpublished paper, 'The influence of stress and strain on the physical properties of matter. Part I - Elasticity (continued). The effects of change of temperature on the internal friction and torsional elasticity of metals' by Herbert Tomlinson

Reference number: AP/64/7

Date: 1886

Description

Tomlinson shares results which have been obtained in experiments on the effect of change of temperature on the torsional elasticity and internal friction of metals. The apparatus used and the mode of experimenting are fully described in the paper. The vibration-period and the logarithmic decrement are very carefully determined at four different temperatures between 0° Celsius and 100° Celsius.

Includes one page of diagrams of a wire used in Tomlinson's experiments.

Subject: Physics

Received 13 April 1886. Read 6 May 1886. Communicated by William Grylls Adams.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 40 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'The influence of stress and strain on the physical properties of matter. Part I. Elasticity (continued). The effect of change of temperature on the internal friction and torsional elasticity of metals'.
