Description

Scharff describes a series of researches which were carried out while acting as assistant to Professor [William Carmichael] McIntosh, at the St Andrews Marine Laboratory [Fife, Scotland; later replaced by Gatty Marine Laboratory]. The chief material consists of the intra-ovarian ovum of the gurnard (Trigla gurnardus), though several other marine forms are examined. The paper is divided into five sections: 'The nucleus and its changes in the smaller ova'; 'The larger ova and the formation of the yolk spherules'; 'The egg membranes'; 'The follicular layer'; and 'Development'.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 41 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the intra-ovarian egg of some osseous fishes'.
